Ultimately, sports are defined as patterns of behaviour, which can be compared and contrasted. This article outlines some of the key definitions of sport. Throughout history, sport has undergone many changes. In the 17th century, it grew more secular. The role of sport in the Czech Republic was emphasized by the 17th-century educator John Amos Comenius. Elites of the 15th-16th centuries tended to prefer dancing, and were delighted by geometric patterns in movement. Ballet was also developed in France during this time, and choreographers taught horses to perform graceful movements. In the same time period, French and Italian fencers viewed fencing as an art, and northern Europeans emulated the practice.
